Community/Facility info: Built on a 180-acre tract of land a few miles from the Tennessee state line, this 199-bed hospital in Mississippi, opened in 1988. Since then, the population of the five-county area served by the hospital has boomed, and the hospital is steadily expanding to meet the needs of its patients. In 2001, the hospital completed an expansion project that nearly doubled the size of the hospital and added much-needed services. A new critical care unit opened on Valentine's Day and brought open-heart surgery to the county for the first time ever. In April, the hospital's labor and delivery services expanded with the opening of the 34,000-square-foot Women's Pavilion. And the County's first radiation oncology unit opened in December. The hospital's Center for Diagnostics, which opened in 1995, offers technological advantages. CT scanners, for example, provide images five to 10 times faster than conventional scanners. A digital stereotactic breast biopsy unit uses a computer-guided needle to precisely locate any abnormal mass and extract a specimen of tissue with lightning speed. Early in 1997, the hospital's emergency department was expanded to five times its original size. It now measures 15,500 square feet and has 21 rooms and five ambulance bays.
